Welcome 2019 Graduates – Your Program. Your Pace. Your Future.
Our Management Team thoroughly enjoyed meeting the newest and freshest members of the Civilex team – our 2019 Graduates. Directors and Senior Managers officially welcomed our Graduates to the Civilex family during a shared lunch overlooking Williamstown Port, and Graduates were also introduced to their mentors for the 2019 year.
Our 2019 Grads have been carefully selected from a pool of more than 570 applicants, and many of them require no formal introduction having already commenced part-time work at Civilex while completing their degree. From January though, they will embark on their two-year program full time, creating a solid understanding of how different departments – both in Head Office and on-site – collaborate to deliver Civilex’s diverse range of civil construction projects.
Construction Director Ray Dando is thrilled to offer unrivalled opportunities at Civilex due to our rapid expansion both in terms of employees, turnover and project diversity. “Our low staff turnover and company progression mean our Graduates can look forward to long-term careers rather than just landing a job. Our growth, expansion and unique outlook mean they can fast-track their careers while working in a family-oriented culture – one that demands high performance as well as a healthy work-life balance.”
Civilex Graduates are immersed in live environments from the get-go where they obtain a range of skills and experience. Each Graduate has direct contact with their mentor as well as having access to Senior Management. Pre-Contracts Director Andrew Fairbairn has watched the previous two years of Civilex Graduates flourish on the Graduate Program. “Since introducing the Graduate Program into our business we have effectively developed the next generation of leaders – who think outside the square – by offering real and flexible career opportunities in a sustainable growth industry.”
But don’t just take the views from our Directors as gospel. We sat down and chatted with 2018 Graduate Matthew Martin about his experience in the Civilex Graduate Program: “Getting started with Civilex is an exciting journey that gives you access in and around the entire business from procurement, surveying and stakeholder management to estimating, communication, and contract management. There are safety and financial aspects that graduates are exposed to as well as setting up and maintaining a three-week look ahead program.”
2018 Graduate Matthew Martin, Site Engineer
Matt completed his four-year Civil Engineering degree at Deakin University’s Geelong Campus. He was working on a Christmas Tree Farm when he heard through a friend that Civilex was seeking engineering-qualified graduates. He applied and was accepted into the 2018 Graduate Program, and is now halfway through the hands-on program.
Uni Life v Site Life
Matt enjoyed traffic engineering and geo subjects at uni, but nothing prepared him for his first live site experience with Civilex – the Mt Gellibrand Wind Farm Project. “The Mt Gellibrand Wind Farm Project was my very first site work. Gaining eight months of exposure and experience on a site like that was both impressive and unique. I learnt lots.”
Grad Program Highlights
Matt enjoys the structure and diversity that has been built into the Civilex Graduate Program and is interested in fast-tracking his progress. He also appreciates the Civilex company culture: a great mix of people who all value high-performance and real support.
With one year under his belt, Matt has already gained fundamental engineering experiences across a diverse range of sectors – renewable energy, road pavements, and most recently rail. The CD9 Rail Project, part of the Level Crossing Removal Authority, involved the removal of nine level crossing to make way for elevated rail, five new rail stations and extensive community parkland and car parking built underneath between Caulfield and Dandenong. “Spending the last six months on a rail environment project is not for the light-hearted – it’s fast-paced and full on and has been extremely rewarding.”
Grad Program Support
Matt has plenty of support around him – working closely with Civilex Project Manager Nick Loucaides and being mentored by Construction Director Ray Dando means he is well-equipped for a long-standing engineering career. When questioned about his future career pathway Matt responds with a smile, “I’ll be staying here at Civilex for quite a while – my goal is to become a PM.”
And now that the CD9 Project has wrapped up Matt’s looking forward to his Christmas break and starting on a new project in the new year.
Best wishes to Matt – and of course our 2019 Graduates – for what promises to be another exciting and rewarding year for Civilex.
