Ignite Graduate Program in Action at Melbourne Airport

Nathan recently joined Civilex as part of our 2020 Ignite Graduate Program. Based at Melbourne Airport on the Airport Drive road works project, he’s been on site experiencing the Ignite Graduate Program in action with his first road-based construction project for long-term Civilex client APAM.
Nathan got to see a variety of road construction plant and equipment operating. Many he’d never seen in action before. “I had never been involved with road plant before, such as a profiler and grader that are essential in maintaining the construction program.”

As part of the project management team, Nathan received direction from both Civilex Project Engineer Jack Collier and Civilex General Supervisor Nigel Brocklesby, who he describes as mentors. “Much of my role was ensuring that personnel were safe on-site, this meant being diligent to all the different hazards and risks that could potentially hinder the project. If I had questions, I knew I could ask Jack and Nigel.” Nathan also liaised with the client on commercial, technical and safety matters.

Although Nathan has been with Civilex as a graduate for a short time, he’s gained valuable construction experience on-site. “I’ve experienced so much already and feel confident in transitioning to the next project. During the final stages of the Airport Drive project, I was given greater project operational responsibility – an experience which shaped and sharpened my time management skills.”

Project Outcome: The Airport Drive project scope involved three main stages of road rehabilitation which was approximately 475lin.m long consisting of lime stabilisation and deep lift asphalt – PFAS stockpiling for all spoil.
Airport Drive was open once the Civilex team successfully reached practical completion before the Easter break on 28 March, originally scheduled for completion on 24 April. A great effort by the team.
