National Road Safety Week 2019
This week is National Road Safety Week (NRSW) 6-12 May, an initiative created by the SARAH (Safer Australian Roads and Highways) Group and supported by Commonwealth, State and Local Governments, road safety organisations and businesses across the country including Civilex.
Road Safety Week
As part of highlighting safety on our roads this week, keep a lookout for national and state icons transform to yellow as a way of demonstrating support for safer roads as well as emergency vehicles, fleet trucks, cars, motorbikes and bicycles also displaying yellow ribbons in acknowledgement of this initiative.
Part of VicRoads Towards Zero campaign, Civilex has been at the forefront of building safer regional roads. Contracted to VicRoads, Civilex has already completed regional road improvement projects on Melbourne-Lancefield Road and is currently undertaking road improvement works along Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road.
The Civilex safety team attended last Friday’s Roads Australia (Melbourne) Spotlight on Safety industry event where they listened to industry leaders speak on road worker safety, mental health, vehicle safety, road user safety and road infrastructure. Attendees also heard tragic personal stories from road trauma victims and the impact on their families. Civilex HSEQ Manager Michael Spiteri says, “The safety improvement works along Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road – including lane widening, roundabout development and road surface rehabilitation – are immensely important to the community.”
Civilex NRSW Business Communications
The most common causes for fatalities on our roads are speeding, alcohol and other illicit drugs, driver distraction, fatigue and seatbelts. This week across all Civilex work sites toolbox talks will include a safety alert highlighting NRSW, the Fatal 5, the impact of road safety discussions with family and friends, and how to get involved. An additional toolbox talk will be delivered mid-week to connect Civilex’s Safety 7 program dedicated Traffic Management category.
As a head contractor, Civilex works closely with clients and traffic management organisations to ensure our employees are safe when performing construction activities in a live road environment, and that road users arrive at their destinations safely and efficiently. Our Safety 7 Traffic Management category is separated into two applications: interaction between mobile plant or vehicles, and ground personnel and construction activities interfacing with the public.
Civilex Group HSEQ Manager George Markelis says, “National Road Safety Week is an important and very relevant calendar event for our business. To connect with this initiative, this month’s safety focus will include refresher training for our staff in the form of toolbox talks across the entire business. Talks will detail the controls within Safety 7’s Traffic Management category and be followed up with field inspections and interacting with workgroups focusing specifically on traffic management controls.”
