Western Roads Upgrade – Civilex Works Commence
The $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade is underway. The project comprises eight high-priority road upgrades with a comprehensive 20-year rehabilitation and maintenance program covering more than 260 kilometres of road across Melbourne’s west.
Civilex is contracted by design and construction lead WBHO Infrastructure, part of the Netflow Western Roads Upgrade consortium also comprising Cintra and Plenary as joint project sponsors and joint SPV managers.
Civilex is contracted to perform works on Dunnings and Palmers Roads (Point Cook Road to Princes Freeway) with more than 18,000 cars and trucks using Dunnings Road and Palmers Road every day. The works include adding an extra traffic lane in each direction as well as a dedicated bus lane in each direction from Wallace Avenue to Dunnings Road; widening Skeleton Creek bridge; upgrading 10 intersections, and building walking and cycling paths.
Civilex Project Engineer Dan Knights is excited to have a hands-on role in the project which encompasses significant bridge works. Once complete the infrastructure improvements will improve safety, reduce congestion and provide more reliable travel times for road users. The project team has gone through an extensive 10-month design and planning phase involving a large team of Civilex engineers. Dan says, “A lot of thought has gone into design and planning of the works and environmental impact with Melbourne Water which will transform Skeleton Creek bridge into a 60-metre-long by 15-metre-wide bridge.”
The Civilex project team is working around the clock – day and night – to get works underway on this major project. Civilex General Supervisor Nigel Brocklesby motivates the team at a recent site team BBQ reinforcing the collective and collaborative effort required to achieve the best outcome. “We’re a family and spend a lot of time together – day and night – so the key is to be communicating at all times. We’re a cog – we all work together and back each other throughout the project.”
The Civilex team is ready to deliver on its largest road project to date and produce a quality project outcome.
