Bayswater Grade Separation

On Friday 4th November 2016, Civilex commenced works on the Bayswater Grade Separation Project. Civilex have been successfully awarded a major package of works for the Laing O’Rourke Fulton Hogan Alliance and VicRoads. This project involves removing two of Victoria’s most dangerous level crossings at Scoresby Road and Mountain Highway as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project.

November will host a month long occupation for the project. Civilex have deployed an equipment fleet of 50 and over 75 personnel to work around the clock, 24hrs per day, 7 days per week. During this time, Civilex scope will involve the rail sleeper removal, major earthworks, preparation of shotcrete walls and formation of the new rail alignment up to 8m lower than pre-existing rail line, over approximately 1 kilometre of track.

To ensure the health and wellbeing of Civilex staff over this intense 30 day shutdown period, we have introduced 3 shifts per day instead of a standard 2 and incorporated an overlap for effective handover of site operations from one shift to the next.

Caulfield Grammar

In May 2016, Civilex Victoria were awarded the Wheelers Hill Traffic Project for Caulfield Grammar School. Since this time, Civilex have been working at the Wheeler’s Hill Campus, completing the $8m main entrance upgrade for the school. This project is of particular importance to Caulfield Grammar as it addresses their traffic congestion and spatial issues and includes an exciting upgrade to the main entrance. The Civilex scope includes the main entrance upgrade, construction of a new maintenance facility, storage facility, access roads and parking facilities.

Since project commencement, the project team have worked hard to accommodate the specific needs of the school to ensure that daily operations were not affected by the works. Careful planning of the main entrance upgrade was paramount to achieve the tight one week shutdown during the school holidays. Civilex successfully realigned the roundabout entrance, installed new drainage, duplicated the existing entrance way and re-sheeted 50m of the existing entrance road all in time for the return of the students. The Civilex team were praised for their workmanship and efficiency by the Caulfield Grammar Construction team after this intense week of construction activities.

The works are scheduled for completion in January 2017. With all major milestones achieved to date, Civilex is on track to complete the project within the proposed timeframe.

Deakin University Sporting Fields

Civilex Victoria, as Head Contractor, has delivered a high profile sporting precinct for Deakin University to be used by professional athletes and in particular the Geelong Football Club for training sessions throughout the AFL season.

Works included construction of new sporting fields including athletics, soccer, basketball, netball, AFL, cricket and baseball. All areas conform to international standards, including natural turf for a Melbourne Cricket Ground sized oval, synthetic grass for a soccer oval requiring FIFA certification and a synthetic rubber acrylic athletics track that is IAAF certified. In addition to being used for competition and informal sports, the facility boasts an outdoor learning hub to advance the teachings of its sports biomechanics department. In addition to the new sporting fields, Civilex was also been engaged to undertake heavy earthworks, road and path construction, hard and soft landscaping and hardstand areas, lighting, security and other similar infrastructure as part of this contract.

Careful planning and staging of the works was required to keep the university operational during the construction works, to ensure the safe flow of traffic and pedestrians throughout the work zone. The project required a high level of stakeholder consultation and engagement to ensure external parties were abreast of any changing site conditions, especially when working around or near adjacent buildings and public zones.
