Joe Bartolo is the Managing Director of Civilex. With over 15 years’ experience in the industry, he has worked on hundreds of construction projects throughout Melbourne.
As well as his extensive background in construction, Joe has a vast knowledge across all aspects of construction including project delivery, risk management, business management and development, programming and financial control.
Combined with his analytical style and his problem-solving approach, his strong skill set includes identifying and developing business opportunities, management and all forms of construction. Joe has a strong emphasis on safety, innovation, efficiency and staff development, and has been instrumental in shaping the culture of the organisations that he leads.
Joe is a member of the Concrete Institute of Australia, Master Builders, Directors Institute of Australia and the Civil Contractors Federation. He has a Diploma of Project Management, Diploma Business Management and Certificate 3 OH&S, and has completed a Company Directors course, Contracts and Legal Obligations and Leadership course.
Joe is also a Director of Conset and Urbancorp.
Ray Dando is the Construction Director of Civilex. In this role, Ray is responsible for business development and management of Project Managers, Project Engineers, Site Foremen and Leading Hands.
Prior to joining Civilex in 2010, Ray worked in a variety of Project Manager and Commercial Manager roles for various organisations working for clients such as CITIC, Vic Roads, John Holland, Deakin University, Metro Trains, PTV and a variety of local councils on projects up the value of $400 million. Recent Civilex achievements have included overseeing the Regional Rail Link Project (Leightons), Ravenhall Prison Civil Works (John Holland) and MLS Service Tunnel (Leightons).
Ray’s robust approach to the construction industry is a key driver of Civilex’s past and future success. Ray leads from the front and gives his team on site the responsibility to build projects that exceed the client’s expectations. Ray has now overseen over 200 separate projects for Civilex and has helped Civilex secure repeat work with our clients.
Ray has a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), is a Member of IEAust and the Institute of Company Directors of Australia. Ray has also completed his Certificate 3 in OH&S along with a number of courses including Contract and Legal Obligations, Public Speaking, Company Directors and Project Management.
Andrew Fairbairn is the Estimating Director of Civilex. Since 2010, Andrew has overseen an Estimating Department that has successfully won over 200 project up to the value of $30 million. Formerly with John Holland and BMD as a Project Manager, Andrew has the industry know-how and technical capability to drive civil construction projects from inception to completion. Key projects he has overseen include the Design and Construct of Westernport Highway Duplication ($18 million) and the Thompsons Road Duplication ($12 million). With this site experience, Andrew is able to utilise his knowledge in civil construction to ensure Civilex prepare accurate and thorough tenders.
Andrew has developed a respected reputation with many clients including Vic Roads, Powercor, Metro Trains, Victrack, as well as a number of private clients through an engaging Estimating approach. Andrew has a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), is a Member of IEAust and the Institute of Company Directors of Australia. He has also completed his Certificate 3 in OH&S, Leadership and Management, Risk Management and a Company Directors course.
CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
As Chief Financial Officer, Chris’ responsibilities include controller and treasury duties as well as economic strategy and forecasting.
Chris also provides commercial insight and strategy to the Board of Directors, leads the finance team, ensures that best practice is implemented and develops policies and procedures.
As well as this, Chris has a central role in the preparation of financial statements, managing the budgeting process, measuring and controlling Civilex’s business risks and assisting in the financial management of projects.
His years of experience afford him a great deal of skill and knowledge, enabling Chris to assist Civilex in its growth strategies.
A civil engineer with 11 years’ experience, Matthew Gurney is our Construction Manager at Civilex, responsible for delivering major construction contracts in the government and private-sector. A talented and astute professional, Matthew is adept at using his background in bridge, freeway, drainage, building, marine and airport construction and upgrade projects to deliver exceptional results.
His responsibilities cover the entire gamut of construction, including day to day contract management, quality assurance, project monitoring, cost reviews, programming, managing daily works and ensuring occupational health and safety compliance throughout all Civilex projects.
He holds a number of qualifications including: Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours), Inaugural Fellow of Roads Australia, WorkSafe OH&S Construction (White Card), Rail Safety Awareness (Level 1) and First Aid Certificate (Level 2).
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Ben is an extremely experienced and talented Business Development Manager. He joined the Civilex team after a decorated career in business development spanning 15 years.
During that time he has built an enviable record of consistently exceeding the sales goals he has been set. His journey has included many branches of the infrastructure
industry and positions all over the Eastern seaboard of Australia.
The keys to Ben’s success are his negotiating capabilities and his strong networking skills. The network he has built includes many Tier One organisations in the construction sphere. Ben’s ability to think and act strategically enable him to ‘see the big picture’ and to build ongoing business-to-business relationships.
HUMAN RESOURCES AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS MANAGER
Olivia’s role as Human Resources and Industrial Relations Manager is multifaceted and includes a range of responsibilities including performance management, induction & on-boarding, end to end recruitment, counselling and grievance handing in addition to managing employment contracts, trade unions and employee wellbeing.
Olivia has extensive experience in employee relations, system review and analysis, and the implementation of policies and procedures.
Her 8 years in the human resources sector, has enabled the development of exceptional interpersonal skills coupled with an intuitive understanding of team dynamics and individual values. She is dedicated to delivering exceptional work outcomes and is passionate about providing high quality services to our clients and building on stakeholder relationships.
Olivia is highly regarded for her hard work, initiative, sound communication skills and commitment to personal development.
Eric joined Civilex three years ago as a senior estimator to work on major projects. He has now been promoted to the position of Estimating Manager. This follows an industry career spanning 13 years, most of them spent in the estimating field. Eric has built experience in most aspects of civil construction during this time.
Since his arrival at Civilex, Eric has submitted many successful tenders and has developed and mentored the estimating team, resulting in continued improvement in the estimating function. Eric holds degrees in civil engineering and business administration.
These, combined with his extensive experience and his superior work ethic, outfit him perfectly for the position of Estimating Manager.
In addition to his management and supervisory responsibilities in the estimating department, Eric will continue to manage the tender preparation and submission process, particularly on major projects. He will also lead the submission and negotiation phases of tenders. Most importantly, Eric will continue to check that tenders are profitable and provide long term benefit to the company.
Kerry started with Civilex as Company Accountant and was soon promoted to Finance Manager. Her qualifications are impressive, having completed degrees in Law and Commerce, gaining Honours and Distinctions.
Prior to joining Civilex, Kerry worked for several years in the Audit department of a public accounting firm, with an emphasis on large construction and manufacturing clients.
Apart from her duties managing the finance team, Kerry is responsible for preparing the annual accounts as well as a variety of financial reports and lodgements.
Matthew Bell is a vastly experienced manager who has worked for Civilex twice – once on secondment to manage some specific projects and later to operate as a permanent Project Manager. From there Matt was appointed the company’s first Procurement Manager. His journey has included a large number of successful civil projects as well as many years as a senior executive with one of Australia’s largest companies.
Matt holds qualifications in business, training and safety. Coupled with these are the numerous skills in negotiation, communication and management that he has collected along the way. He is street smart and impressive at every level.
Matt’s role as Procurement Manager revolves around sourcing and managing the supplies required in Civilex projects. This involves building strong relationships with other stakeholders. He also sources and manages subcontractors and oversees the agreements under which they work.
Aaron McArthur is Civilex’s Survey Manager. Following more than ten years in the industry, he joined Civilex almost five years ago as its first surveyor. He was promoted to Survey Manager soon after. During his time with the company, Aaron has implemented and maintained the Survey Procedures and Policies used on every job.
Aaron holds qualifications in Spatial Information and Safety Awareness and has assembled extensive knowledge of civil construction works.
He is also proficient in the use of a number of software tools used in creating survey programs.
In addition to his duties managing the survey team, Aaron is responsible for quality control and the checking and supervision of plans and survey models. He allocates jobs to the team and also helps out with servicing on equipment and technical support for the operators.
ASSET AND LOGISTICS MANAGER
As a new addition to the Civilex management group, Kris Bogdanovski brings with him considerable experience in the civil construction industry.
He has worked in hands-on roles as well as a range of supervisory and management positions. His history of promotion in his previous employment illustrates the obvious quality that Kris displays in his work.
Kris holds a mechanic qualification and plans to complete a business management course in coming years. He has a wide range of skills, encompassing technical areas along with planning, organisation, negotiation and management.
Kris’s central role within Civilex is to manage all the company’s plant and equipment, to make sure it is the best fit for each project and to ensure that it’s safe to use at all times.
As HSE Manager of Civilex, George Markelis has responsibility for developing, auditing and reviewing our safe work practices to ensure we meet, and exceed, industry standards and legislative requirements. With a vast range of skills including construction management, workplace safety, contractor management and project planning, George works closely with our teams to assist with implementing appropriate safety management systems for every project.
Prior to becoming HSE Manager, George had operational knowledge of the construction industry in Victoria as both a Leading Hand at Civilex, and in a domestic construction business for a number of years. It is this ‘hands on’ knowledge that ensures George can make practical recommendations and is able to introduce innovative solutions that meet operational needs.
His outstanding qualifications include: Bachelor of Science (La Trobe University), HIA – Cert IV Building and Construction Management, MBAV – Cert IV WHS, and FPA Australia – Cert II in Fire Protection & Inspection. Additional training and certification includes: Construction Industry Safety Induction (Red Card), BLSC/MBAV – Managing Onsite Safety, Holmesglen/State Wide River and Stream Management – Site Environmental Management (Level 2), CPR – Applied First Aid (Level 2), Cert- Train Track Safety Awareness (Level 1), license to Perform High Risk Work (Class DG).
As HSQ Manager, Michael works alongside George Markelis in maintaining Civilex’s AS 4801, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications.
Michael’s duties include liaising with regulatory authorities, monthly reporting to Civilex’s Executive Team and organising and maintaining all company training requirements and records.
In addition, Michael manages incident investigations, workplace safety reviews and statistical analysis as well as internal training and inductions. He is also responsible for all site inspections and quality auditing.
Michael’s high degree of skill and 12 years industry experience both in Australia and abroad assist him to manage his many duties.
With over 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, our Area Manager Steve McInerney has an outstanding reputation for quality and completing projects ahead of time. Steve has been involved in projects ranging from $500k to $150M, including road construction, drainage, earthworks, docks projects and airport pavements and much more.
As a key member of our Project Delivery team, Steve’s construction expertise has enhanced the way we manage each project. Prior to joining Civilex Steve has worked on several major projects at companies including Watpac Civil and BMD Constructions.
Steve holds certificates and qualifications in OHS (Level 3), OHS Construction Industry Induction, First Aid, Airport Safety Officer (Certificate), DLL Licence (various machinery), and a Certificate of Advanced Works Management.
